Auditions for “Crimes of the Heart”

web_print_squareNotes on “Crimes of the Heart” from Director Kate Kale Wolf

Auditions will be held on April 9 & 10 for “Crimes of the Heart” which will be performed May 25 – June 3.

Plot & History

This touching and hilarious comedy/drama takes place in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to deal with multiple family emergencies.  Lenny, the oldest sister is a “spinster” whose looming birthday reminds her of diminishing marital prospects.  Meg, the middle sister who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast.  Meanwhile Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after being accused of having shot her husband in the stomach.  A memorable movie of this play was made starring Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange, and Sissy Spacek.

Here is some Wikipedia info on the play, the playwright, and their many awards.

I generally like to rehearse Sunday through Thursday nights, but the calendar will be developed once we know the cast’s conflicts. Although the play is very funny, I see it as a very warm, intimate and real story.  The relationships of the characters are very important – we need to see them and feel them throughout the story. The rehearsal process will support building those relationships as well as the comedy.

Read-through will be soon after casting and most rehearsals will start the week of April 16.  Tech rehearsals will be May 21-24. Performances run May 25-June 3. Strike is June 4.
